Stubble Burning: A Strategic Failure and Requires Workable Strategies

Abstract
India is an agrarian country and generates an enormous quantity of agricultural wastes (known as stubble) which would further enhance in future due to increase in production of foodgrains to feed the growing population. Stubble burning has become imperative for farmers as combine harvester leaves crop residue after harvesting the crops to pave the way for the next crop, the farmers usually set the residue on fire to clear the field for winter crops which has a long-lasting effect on the environment. The topic of stubble burning needs close examination as it has become a critical issue causing severe health problems besides posing a menace to the environment and causing loss of fertile part of the land. In the light of this background, the current study examines the causes of stubble burning and various Indian Government policies and schemes which are being implemented along with a few recommendations which can be practiced to prevent stubble burning are discussed in the paper.
