The Role of ICT’s in Fostering Sustainable Education in Developing Countries: Case of TVET in Kenya

Abstract
As resources get scarce, there has been a shift towards sustainable development practices, this is in an effort to counter climate change. Digital revolution and ICT’s have transformed every sector of the economy. One of the sectors is the education sector, in specific TVET. TVET and its role in developing skilled and competent labour for the industry has been exposed to and in turn proliferated unsustainable development practices that has led to the degradation of our environment. Emphasis have lately been put on greening TVET but role of ICT’s in supporting Sustainable development has not been clearly understood. This study seeks to establish the role ICT’s plays in promoting sustainable practices in education in developing countries. The objectives of this study where to; evaluate sustainable education practices in selected TVET institutions, identify how ICT has supported these practices, identify challenges and opportunities that Institution have in implementing ICT’s. The study employed mixed research design, and used structured questionnaires as data collection tool. The target was administration, trainers and trainees of 5 TVET institutions. The data focused on 5 areas identified by Herd, G., & Richardson, A. M (2010). These areas are Market demand, Access of TVET, Skilled trainer shortage, Reskilling and Upgrading. From the findings, it can clearly be seen that ICT’s can indeed promote Sustainable development. Use of eLearning can promote Sustainable development issues. Other factors established where automation, monitoring and communication. Further studies may focus on the same subject in developed countries or different level of education.
