A Special Experience in Art Education: Autism and Art

Abstract
Today children with autism can be diagnosed at an early age and benefit from general education services. [1]. In general education schools, teachers from various disciplines besides special education teachers provide training for children with autism. These teachers lack necessary knowledge and experience regarding the behavioral and developmental characteristics of children with autism [2]. In this study, challenges of children with autism experience during art activities and basic suggestions will be offered to the teachers and teacher candidates working with children with autism during art activities to overcome these challenges [3,4]. Basic strategies enabling the children with autism to participate in art activities, will be presented in the poster under these headings: (a) strategies about general behavioral characteristics, (b) strategies about tactile awareness, (c) strategies about auditory and olfactory sensitivity, (c) strategies about the choice making and adaptation of art equipment,(d) strategies about the planning of the teaching [4]. Considering the class dynamics, only functional strategies and suggestions, which can be applied by the teachers will be presented.
