Chewing Gum can Faster Recovery of Bowel Motility for Patients under General An aesthesia

Abstract
Immotile bowel often hinder recovery of patients after general anaesthesia. Prolonged recovery may cause complications or even death. However, few articles evaluated the effectiveness of chewing gum on inducing bowel movement. This study aims to find the best intervention to relieve bowel movelessness after general anaesthesia. In 3 studies with 528 participants whose mean age was 46.1 years, gum chewing in postoperative patients were significantly enhanced bowel motility with earlier detection of bowel sound, first passage of flatus and feces, than those who did not chew gum. Gum chewing is cost-effective for rapid recovery of bowel motility. Its effects on patients under local and spinal anaesthesia should be further investigated.
