Utilization of E-Learning in Open and Distance Education in Nigeria

Abstract
The demand of higher education for balanced development had led to the open and distance education in Nigeria. The scope of this paper covered Nigeria as a country and e-learning facilities which include: satellite broadcast, CD Rom, online video conferencing, personal computers, internet, computer software packages and so on. Citizens of the country who are not privileged to attend the conventional university had demanded for higher education for job improvement through Open and Distance Education. Open and Distance Education (ODE) is that mode of learning which seeks to remove constraint of time, pace and space, so that as many people as possible are able to take advantage of meaningful learning opportunities throughout their lives. It is an alternative platform of learning for people who really want to learn. The objectives of utilization of e-learning in open and distance education include the following (a) to provide e-learning facilities needed in preparing open and distance education and to reduce cost in spite of the large audience. (b) to augment the work of conventional institutions in places where conventional institutions are unable to admit all candidates who require education. (c) What are the challenges faced with use of e-learning facilities in open and distance education. (d)to provide lifelong learning irrespective of the age of the learner. The driving force which is the motivation of utilization of e-learning in open and distance education is that higher education should develop in the beneficiary a certain number of generic skills to a level that will ensure the continued creative productivity of the individual. This paper identifies the need for enhance access to the utilization of e-learning facilities to higher education. Problems faced with the use of e-learning facilities in open and distance education were highlighted. Recommendations were made, one of which include the need to provide ODE with e-learning facilities by the appropriate authorities. Special arrangements should be made so that qualified and admitted candidates could receive courses by correspondence and contacts through e-learning.
