Abstract
During the last years, a series of changes with respect to real estate and the form of retail trade have been observed in Greece. Indeed, retail trade is altering not only in its location but also its basic business unit structure which, in Greece, is the small and medium sized enterprises. Enclosed shopping malls and discount villages are developed and as a results the city centers tend to decline. The development of open malls in city centers could be a solution in order to change this situation. This practice contributes to the regeneration of neglected urban areas, especially in large urban agglomerations. Moreover, the usage of smart applications and new technologies could help to promote each open mall and make it familiar to the people. Thus, the creation of smart open malls could help to revitalize urban areas and to socially and economically regenerate many Greek cities. In this paper, we focus on studying the topics presented above. Information was collected through literature review. Finally, international experience concerning the practice of open malls, ways were identified to implement similar interventions and were recorded.
