Nation as Writing in Vidas Secas(1963), from Nelson Pereira Dos Santos

Abstract
Brazilian filmmaker Nelson Pereira dos Santos was very important for the consolidation of cinema and audiovisual in Brazil and is considered one of the great agents in the acclaim of the cinematographic movement Cinema Novo, in the decades of 1950 and 1960. This filmmaker has a very vast work, with strong appeal to popular culture and the brazilian nation. He made several films adapted directly from works of national literature and others inspired by its literary tradition. In his filmography, it is noticeable that there’s a direct relation between cinema, literature and nation - therefore, the main objective of this research is to understand what are the aspects of a notion of nation’s writing that are present in the filmmaker's filmography and how he writing and impressing national elements in his body of work. The theoretical-methodological approach of this research is based on the study of the notion of nation’s writing from, fundamentally, the internal material to the film itself, that is, its technical-artistic tools, in order to locate those elements present in the work, after a more thorough reading of the literary work that inspired the film work. From there, it will be suggested a reflection of the film as an archive, in order to reflect if national elements may also have contributed to witring aspects of the nation in other cultural flows that unfolded and that were influenced by this artistic production of Nelson Pereira dos Santos.
