The Nematicidal Property Of Aqueous Crude Extract Of Calotropis Procera On Tomatoes (Lycoperscium Esculentus)

Abstract
The Efficacy of the aqueous crude extract from Calotropis procera Linn. on the growth and production of tomatoes (Lycoperscium esculentus Mill.) infested by (Meloidogyne javanica) was investigated. An aqueous crude extract of Calotropis procera Linn. was prepared by soaking 2kg of dried powdered leaf in the ratio of 1:5mg/ml for 24 hours; this was sieved and concentrated with water bath at a controlled temperature of not above 60°C also dried with a freeze drier to obtain a dry stock solution of 487grams of the dried crude extract. The plant pot of tomatoes infested with Meloidogyne javanica was treated with different concentration of the extracts as in 50 ml of distilled water, a serial dilution ratio of 1:50 w/v, 1:25 w/v, 3:50 w/v, 2:25w/v as 25% to 100% concentration respectively and distilled water to serve as the control (0%). There is a high rate of nematode reduction in number as against the control (distilled water). Plant pots treated with the extracts showed a significant shorter days to flowering which is an indication of the leaf containing and organic substance which could enhance rapid growth and production of fruit in the crop, The result also showed that Calotropis procera leaf extract contains a toxic substance which could inhibit existence of root knot nematode which attacks tomato and has the potentiality of inhibiting Meloidogyne javanica.
